Lost
in Cyber Space???
Has your web site been dropped from the
Search Engines??
The
buzz amongst Search Engine Optimiser Guru's in the US is that Search
Engines are now dropping sites if they are "stale" or
considered inactive.
The
major Search Engine spiders will re-spider home pages about once a month
and if there is no change in the contents over a period of two months or
so, it may then be regarded as stale and possibly
dropped.
So,
do you wait for it to happen or take a pro-active approach?
The
Search Engines measure a number of factors, over and above the meta
tag structure these include change in content, linking relevance and traffic
generated from linking are becoming critical considerations....
The
"Fix"
By
changing the code slightly in the description and body copy
areas of your home (or doorway pages) on a regular basis
the spiders recognise that updating has taken place.
If that
updating enhances the application of keywords (as it should)
then the rank may even improve.
So to
manage your ranking program, update once a month and re-submit.
The risk is that you could loose your ranking from this activity
if the keyword elements are not spot on, be cautious.
To
improve your content and links it may be worth while considering
the development of a new home page more closely resembling a
"portal" (something along the lines of the Optus
home page) with strong internal and external
links.
Potential sources
for external links
Suppliers,
customers, customer suppliers, resellers/distributors, related
Associations, complementary organisations - all represent a
linking opportunity. (your listing in FastLook
- ed :)
Another
is to run your keywords on one of the Search Engine and get a
list of those sites that are related to you on a business basis.
Yes - some will be competitors but not all. Take the lead
provided from the consumer market, in the supermarket all the
toothpaste brands are next to each other, in the food halls KFC
is next to McDonalds. The closer you are visually, to your
competitors the better - it's then up to your marketing effort
to involve the customer - this is where branding comes into
its own.
It is
important to get a reciprocal link - so you will probably need
to email or contact that organisation to request this -
offer them reciprocity as well.
Do set
up all these links on your home page - this is where the
spiders start their journey. The SE's assess relativity so
preferably don't link with a non related content/business
site.
Adding
some "stickiness" to your site
By
providing a "portal" type home page as discussed
above, visitors will spend more time exploring your site because
it will be content and subject rich. This is a prime
opportunity to get some visitor information. Tactics such as
"would you like updated information to be
forwarded to you? Give us your email address" or "sign
a guest book", will help you to grow that all important
client data base.
